Augmented reality in the field of radars

Augmented reality (AR) is the process by which it is possible to overlay a virtual reality (digital content) over the real, concrete world, observed by the naked eye.

The concept of augmented reality involves improving an observer's perception of the environment, by supplementing it with various elements that help to improve the real process.

 Augmented reality is easy to access with the help of special applications, google services or through glasses dedicated to this purpose. AR glasses are very similar to those of sun or sight, the difference is that these graphs, images, animations, 3D holograms and other digital information as they overlap the real world, which is in the visual field of the user. These augmented reality glasses can be used in various applications and scenarios, from virtual learning, virtual turism, medical training to online dating, games, and entertainment.

 

Types of augmented reality

 ·       AR 3D: allows users to place virtual 3D models, in natural size, over the real environment.

 ·       AR browser: allows users to obtain general digital information, designed a specific object.

 ·       AR gaming: allows games in augmented reality, represents the integration of visual and audio content of the game with the user's environment in real time.

 Uses

 ·       Medicine: may include images of hidden objects, which can be particularly effective for medical diagnosis or surgery. Examples include virtual X-rays based on tomography, before the real-time image from microscopy ultrasound probes.

 ·       Navigation: Head-up display or display stations in cars can provide traffic information. These systems include full interactivity and are used by car manufacturers in windscreens to display traffic information.

 ·       Military and emergency services: The HDM helmets of supersonic aircraft pilots, display vital information in real time directly on their screen: trainings, maps, enemy locations, fire cells or disaster management. Also, in recent years, special training facilities for soldiers based on augmented reality have been implemented,  so that the military is in "real" time on the battlefield. THE AR also appeared at the radar level, making the detection of targets and information about this much easier.

 Augmented reality in the field of radars

 Following a study conducted by U.S. military researchers, it was concluded that using augmented reality technology, we can superimpose information from radar on the image of the real world in real time. Using these, the military saw the environment and superimposed graphics, which consisted of detection locations, digital map, information regarding the target, through a standard or poster or one mounted at the radar level. The information is constantly being modified and adjusted for each perspective and movement of the user.

 The AR technology allows the user to staying the real world but extends it with useful information from computer databases. In the simplest form, the user will follow the world through a video camera and a poster. An AR system overlaps the information in the computer database and from the sensors on the video stream direct. The two types of information remain recorded and are displayed through the same coordinate system so that the information is simple to understand, recordings that are made in real time. By predicting the graphical overlays in a screen session that aligns with the observation meanings, the operator is offered an improved interpretation  – augmented reality – thus perfecting the decision-making process without increasing the cognitive load. An example in this case may be a target that is observed by radar, and the need for radar data allows the movement of the target to be characterized as well.

 

Application

 Flightradar 24 is a real-time flight tracking app, mobile app. This is based on augmented reality. The application presents a map of airports and flights from any location in the world. It can water its on any flight to see the make and model of the aircraft, as well as the origin of the flight, destination, speed, and altitude. Also, the application has introduced a software with which we can find out this information on the aircraft in the moments when it flies near us and is visible, just by directing the video camera from the equipment of the phone deaf, and the information will appear as soon as this action was performed.
