Spanish-American War

In full support of Cuba’s independence from Spain and the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana harbor, the United States declares war with Spain on April 21, 1898. After U.S. troops and the U.S. Navy defeat Spanish forces, the war ends with a ceasefire being signed on Aug. 12. The U.S. and Spain sign the Treaty of Paris, guaranteeing the independence of Cuba.
